2017 Alberta Performance Award Winners

Congratulations to the following Alberta based winners in the 2017 Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program Performance Awards:

Alberta bred Performance Award sponsored by the CTHS Alberta - Rebecca O'Neill and BAY BAYOU

This partnership was awarded the 2017 Residing Performance Award - Alberta Division by the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program. Bay Bayou is an Alberta bred Lenado Road horse bred by Cecil Underwood and shown under the name Maverick.

Congratulations to the Alberta duo - Monica Russell and One's Own Accord - named West Division Reserve Champion in the English Pleasure, Equitation and Low Hunter Divisions. This pair also earned 4th place in the Green OTTB II Division for Thoroughbreds who last raced in 2016. In fact, One's Own Accord raced for 8 years including the last 3 at Northlands before beginning a new career in the show ring. Monica comments that "I should also tell you I was his owner and trainer on the track. I was so fond of the old guy, he brought me back to the show ring. I couldn’t stand the thought of not having him in my life."

Further congratulations goes to Albertan Calli Skagen and B G QUEEN LEGACY who earned 6th place in the General Category.

A complete list of all the 2017 Performance Award winners may be found on the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program website at http://tjctip.com/PerformanceAwardsWinners.

The T.I.P. Performance Awards are the annual, self-reported Thoroughbred awards of The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program. The Performance Awards are completely self-reported by the Thoroughbred’s owner or rider based on their participation in ALL SHOWS. The owner or rider must report results from horse shows offering T.I.P. show divisions, classes or awards AND from horse shows that do not offer T.I.P. awards. Horse shows offering T.I.P. awards do not report Performance Award results to T.I.P.

The T.I.P program through the Jockey Club works to encourage the retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines upon completion of careers in racing or breeding.

T.I.P. offers sponsorship for Thoroughbred-only classes and divisions, high point Thoroughbred awards at open horse shows and competitions, a Thoroughbred of the Year Award and a Young Rider of the Year Award. For purposes of eligibility for all T.I.P. classes and awards, a “Thoroughbred” is defined as any horse that has been registered with The Jockey Club.

In order to participate in a T.I.P. class or be eligible for a T.I.P. award, owners and riders must obtain a T.I.P. Number. More information may be found on the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program website at http://tjctip.com

f you visit Anne Kursinski’s Market Street facility in Frenchtown, New Jersey, you might notice a striking bay gelding with a broad blaze and four white socks being ridden by one of her students or her partner, Carol Hoffman. You might wonder about his breeding—until you remember that for Kursinski, a member of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame, nothing can beat a good Thoroughbred. “I am a huge fan of the Thoroughbreds, no question,” said Kursinski, 65, who famously rode ex-race horse Eros to team silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. “Thoroughbreds are intelligent and athletic, brave and light.” The newest Thoroughbred in her life—Bobby Socks, so named in honor of his four white socks—became part of the Market Street family in 2022, after a chance conversation at a horse show between Kursinski and her longtime friend and retired show jumper Mary Chapot.

Lindsay Turcotte didn’t expect that a morning at Century Mile Racetrack in September 2020 would change her whole world, but it did.The racetrack traditionally held a special open house the week of the Grade 3 Canadian Derby to preview the contenders and allow the public to meet the horses’ connections. In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was open only to owners and trainers, but Turcotte (no relation to Secretariat’s legendary jockey) got an invitation from a friend and came to watch the Derby horses work out at the Alberta track.

“If an owner wishes to mark their certificates as 'Retired From Racing,' there's a process to do that for Thoroughbreds that are registered with The Jockey Club,” Bailey said. “It involves returning the completed form, which includes the notarized signature of both parties, photographs so that we can verify the identity of the horse, and The Jockey Club Certificate of Foal Registration to our office so that it can be recorded and stamped accordingly.”
